In 1834 six Dorset farmworkers were arrested for meeting to discuss and object to enforced reduction in wages. Arrested and charged with taking an unlawful oath they were all sentenced to deportation to Australia after the trial in Dorchester. In 1836 public protests across England forced the authorities to issue a pardon and the Tolpuddle Martyrs returned.

Tolpuddle Holiday Cottages allow you the opportunity to enjoy the peace of the Piddle Valley, explore the history generated by the Martyrs, Lawrence of Arabia, and Queen Victoria's visit to Athelhampton House as well as the romance of Thomas Hardy's novels set locally.

Tolpuddle is well placed to easily access Dorset's vast range of places of interest, leisure activities, beaches and sheer beauty. There is plenty to interest everybody and for them to enjoy.
